WaterOne has mitigated a problem common to large distribution systems that have outgrown their initial floating storage and have changed to below-ground, pumped storage to supply the large volumes of hourly peaking storage required. By using a strategically located elevated storage tank, designed for rapid drawdown, minimum system pressures can be maintained for the most common events, such as major pumping equipment failure, large line breaks, or short duration power outages, thus alleviating concerns over contamination due to loss of pressure during such events. The elevated storage also dampens pressure surges during pump changes and would allow time to start emergency generators without loss of minimum system pressures caused by the less common, longer duration power outages or other extended period events.
