Bench-scale cross-flow (24 in[2]) and pilot-scale single element (2.5x40 in[2] and 4.0x40 in[2]) tests were performed to demonstrate scale-up effects and to define optimal operating conditions for nanofiltration (NF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. Natural organic matter (NOM) rejection and membrane flux decline were studied in bench-scale and pilot-scale tests. A f/k ratio, an important operational parameter, was introduced to define optimal operating conditions and predictions for maximum NOM rejection and minimum flux-decline. It was found that a NF membrane showed similar flux-decline trends and NOM rejection in bench-scale and pilot-scale tests. However, a UF membrane showed scale-up effects in terms of NOM rejection; pilot-scale tests exhibited larger NOM rejection than bench-scale tests using the UF membrane.
