The dehumidification performance of several residential central air conditioners (CAC) in a residence were simulated under various climatic conditions. The climate included Amarillo, Ft. Worth, Houston, and Chicago. A minute-by-minute simulation was performed of a residence, the CACs and their control systems using a modified version of the program-TRNSYS.

The simulation indicated a strong correlation between the sensible heat ratio (SHR) of the units and time spent outside the comfort zone. For a hot and humid climate such as Houston the units with SHRs greater than 0.8 did not maintain the residence within the ASHRAE comfort zone as much as 30% of the time. A sensitivity analysis of the performance data also showed that decreasing the set point temperature and undersizing the CACs to 80% of the design load would improve the dehumidification performance.
