Full Description

Odor and taste threshold values were determined in water by a panel of experienced personnel for 63 and 48 industrial chemicals, respectively, by using a triangle evaluation procedure. A standard odor calibrating substance, 1-butalnol, was used to compare these values with those reported in the literature. The lowest odor threshold observed was 0.0008 mg/L for number 2 fuel oil, while Naphtha gave the lowest taste threshold at 0.02 mg/L. Other substances tested included: carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, trichloroethylene, and trichlorobenzene. The sensitivity of the panel members to the standard was greater than that reported in the literature. Test procedures and results are detailed. Includes 14 references, tables.
