About This Item
Full Description
This document covers the activities performed by a navigation officer when preparing for and navigating in ice and identifies a base set of competencies. It aims to provide guidance for establishing a competence foundation, to be supplemented by e.g. operational/supplier manuals and system-specific details.
Operational scope and detailed knowledge, understanding and performance expectations are defined in Sec.3.
Application
This standard can be used in the following ways:
— as a reference to familiarize or assess people in their specific role
— as a reference for global competence and defining training requirements
— as a guide to training providers, who are to develop courses according to the requirements of the standard and the needs of the industry
— as a reference document for e.g. certification of learning programmes and persons.
This standard exceeds Polar Code/STCW basic and advanced training requirements as it contains more performance elements. It can therefore be considered a best practice for navigating in ice infested areas and ice conditions, regardless of the exact geographical location and applicability of the Polar Code.
