The overall goal of this study was to modify commercially available microfiltration (MF) membranes to decrease the biofouling potential of the membranes while maintaining high flux. The objectives were to: evaluate a suite of commercially available MF membranes to determine which membranes have high flux and low biofouling potentials; utilize an ultraviolet(UV)-initiated technique to graft acrylic acid onto the surface of commercially available membranes to reduce biofouling potential; characterize the surface of the modified membranes using EKA and solute rejection; and, compare the biofouling potential and flux of virgin and modified membranes.
