Full Description

Scope and application

This programme is applicable for the approval of manufacturers of:

— filament wound fibre reinforced thermosetting resin tubes for machine components and special pressure system components,

as referred in the Society's rules and standards. For a description of general requirements, conditions and procedures related to the approval, please refer to DNV-CP-0346 which shall be applied in combination with this programme.

The procedures and requirements described in this CP are applicable for obtaining the Society's approval (AoM) certificate based on requirements given by the Society's rules and standards, including:

— DNV-CP-0093 Composite drive shafts and flexible couplings.

Guidance note:

This class programme is not applicable for obtaining EU Marine Equipment Directive (MED) certificates. Visit www.dnv.com for information on MED certification.

This CP gives a description of the procedures and requirements related to documentation, design and type testing applicable for AoM of filament wound fibre reinforced thermosetting resin tubes for machine components and special pressure system components.

This CP does not set the design requirements for the filament wound fibre reinforced thermosetting resin tubes for machine components and special pressure system components. AoM is based on compliance with design requirements given in the DNV rules and/or other regulations and standards. The CP describes how to document compliance with the requirements in order to obtain an AoM certificate for the equipment. This includes, where relevant, technical requirements for how the type tests shall be performed.

An approval will cover fabrication based on one or more of the following types of fibre and resin:

— carbon fibre

— glass fibre

— aramid fibre

— epoxy

— vinyl ester

— polyester.

The approval covers fabrication based on rovings, but other reinforcement configurations may be accepted in additional plies at e.g. local reinforcements or local increases in wall thickness.

The Society's approval is required for each type of fibre and resin for production of certified components.

The carbon fibre yarn shall be of HT (high tensile strength) or HM (high modulus) quality made of PAN (polyacrylonitrile) or pitch based precursors with a maximum number of 48k. Carbon fibre yarns of HT and HM are considered as different types.

The approval does not cover:

— subsequent machining of the tubes except cutting to length

— design (including the laminate schedule) of the tubes. It is assumed that the tubes are fabricated based on a specification supplied by an external or internal client. This limitation will be stated on the approval of manufacturer certificate

— fabrication of conventional piping products. This limitation will be stated on the approval of manufacturer certificate.

The Society's approval certificate is limited to one manufacturer at one production site.

Tests as specified in Sec.3, shall be carried out and verified in one of the following ways:

— at a DNV laboratory

— at an accredited and recognized testing laboratory or accepted by the Society

— at the manufacturer’s premises in the presence of a surveyor.

The type test results shall be submitted to the Society in form of a test report according to ISO 17025 and the additional requirements for the relevant test standard for evaluation.

Range of approval:

An approval will be given for a range of diameters and wall thicknesses of the tubes. The following details will be stated on the certificate:

— fibre type: carbon/glass/aramid

— resin type: epoxy/vinyl ester/polyester

— inside diameter range (mm): (min) – (max)

— outside diameter range (mm): (min) – (max)

— wall thickness range (mm): (min) – (max).

Application:

AoM for manufacture in accordance with this CP is not mandatory, but may be used as an alternative to case by case design approvals for equipment to be installed on vessels classed with the Society.

An AoM certificate in accordance with this CP will confirm compliance with the requirements given in the rules and DNV-CP-0093. The AoM certificate will not confirm compliance with requirements given in other parts of the rules. In case additional requirements given in other parts of the rules shall be covered by the AoM certificate, this shall be specified in the application for AoM and will be stated in the AoM certificate.

Any alteration to the approved condition during the period of validity, e.g. change of major equipment (winding equipment, cure ovens etc.), fabrication conditions etc. or condition of supply shall be reported to the Society. A re-inspection and/or re-testing may be required when deemed necessary by the Society.
