Introduction

The successful deployment of the Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) Network is dependent upon how this resource is managed and the uniqueness of the network infrastructure, which is a key factor in its overall growth.

Interaction between numerous network clientele, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), and the CDPD Consortium, provided a clear understanding of how to address the network management issues, network architecture, topology and routing for the CDPD Network. A clear understanding of these factors and the large markets or geographic areas the CDPD Service Providers will cover necessitates the need for unique names and numbering standards.

In order for the CDPD Network to cover large markets or geographic areas they must possess the ability to have End Systems (ES) transmit and receive data with other ESs attached to the CDPD Network. The primary difference between the CDPD Network and the Internet network architecture is the CDPD's Network mobility.

This plan serves as a road map for the CDPD Network Information Center (NIC) for assigning unique names and numbering standards. It provides the basic understanding of how unique name and numbering standards are formatted and how they are used within the CDPD Network. It can also be adopted and utilized by the CDPD Service Providers and Service Provider Networks delegated the authority to name (assign identifiers to) entities within their scope. This plan should be used in conjunction with Part 3011.
