Full Description

Ozone has been used for water treatment in Europe since the early 1900s. On the other hand, U.S. interest in designing ozonation systems for drinking water treatment did not begin in earnest until the past few years. This paper points out some of the design parameters used by Europeans which should be of benefit to North Americans. Particular attention is paid to differences in current design philosophies between the two continents, especially as regards control systems and the Europeans' conservative approach to ozone generator design. Topics covered include feed gas preparation (air drying and use of oxygen to generate ozone), ozone generation, ozone generator cooling system, ozone contacting systems, off-gas destruction, control systems, use of ozone with granular activated carbon filtration, preozonation, intermediate ozonation, equipment safety, cost considerations, use of proprietary systems.
