About This Item

Full Description

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is a direct transfer of active chlorine (Cl+) from monochloramine to phloroacetophenone (PAP), leading to the formation of trihalomethanes. The reactions of monochloramine and free chlorine with PAP were studied in batch and flow-through reactors. Chloroform was found to be formed at neutral pH, primarily as a result of direct transfer of Cl+ from monochloramine to PAP. Although the chloroform concentration was two orders of magnitude less with monochloramine than with free chlorine, monochloramine can still produce significant concentrations of chloroform. Includes 14 references, tables, figures.
