This paper presents the results of method validation studies, conducted at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water Laboratories, for the ion-chromatographic (IC) method. Specific research objectives to validate the IC method were to: establish single-laboratory lowest concentration minimum reporting levels (LCMRLs) in reagent water; determine single-laboratory detection limits (DLs) in reagent water; verify acceptable precision and accuracy in reagent water, synthetic sample matrix (solution of common anions in reagent water), tap water from a groundwater source, and tap water from a surface water source; determine stability of aqueous standards (unlike the GC method, aqueous standards are necessary to efficiently perform the method, and their stability has not been previously documented for these analytes, with the exception of bromate); and, investigate potential interferences and limitations of the IC method, including an evaluation of the effect of chlorite and chlorate anions in drinking waters treated with chlorine dioxide.
