Full Description

Metcalf & Eddy, Inc. performed a one-season pilot study at a 5 MGD conventional treatment plant located in Rockville, Connecticut. The purpose of the pilot study was to determine if the performance of the existing facility could be improved by using an advanced treatment process. The existing treatment plant consists of two Perifilter-treatment units with GAC filtration; the pilot scale testing utilized the Superpulsator(r) and Type U Superpulsator(r) units in combination with single media GAC and sand filtration. Pre-ozone and/or intermediate ozone were added to the advanced process to evaluate its effect on organic and disinfection byproduct precursor removal. This paper compares the performance of the existing facility and the pilot process for removal of TOC, total trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids in the distribution system. The benefits of utilizing advanced treatment to treat a surface water supply and the capability of the pilot scale and existing processes to meet the Disinfection By-Product Rule are discussed.
