Full Description

The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of ion exchange for removing natural organic matter (NOM) from a high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content surface water and reduce its low pressure membrane fouling properties. The performances of selected anion exchange resins (MIEX® from Orica and IRA958® from Rohm and Haas) were compared to conventional treatment (i.e coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation/filtration). The combination of conventional treatment and anion exchange resin (AER) was also investigated. NOM removal was monitored using several analytical tools, ultraviolet (UV) absorbance at 254 nm (UV254), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM), high performance size exclusion chromatography with UV detection (HPSEC/UV), DOC detection (HPSEC/DOC) and fluorescence detection (HPSEC/FLUO). Includes 9 references, figures.
