Full Description

The generative gear milling principle is based on an incremental (or continuous) positioning of a simple milling “disc” cutter (with trapezoidal or parallel sides) along the “line of action”. While conceptually this method borrows a little from several known gear generation methods – Maag gear rolling grinding, Maag cutting with a rack-type cutter, Hobbing, and Index Milling/Gashing - the innovation is in the math model that combines discrete (or continuous) cuts into a system that generates involute profile and completes the entire gear cutting. An additional innovation is that this technology could be added to an existing hobbing or a milling machine (with a rotary table) as a software “app” providing an appealing ROI. For manufacturing coarse pitch gears, the generative gear milling technology offers improved efficiency, expanded machine pitch capacity, decreased cutter cost, and may even allow reducing the number of machining operations.
