Full Description

W/D S/S BY ESDU 19004

ESDU 92015 introduces the process, indicating the parameters involved (shot material, size and velocity, and exposure time and component hardness) that affect the plastic deformation and residual compressive stresses. The use of the Almen strip to assess intensity is explained. The effects on surface condition are considered and the need to anticipate at the design stage the use of shot peening is explained. Data extracted from the literature are presented graphically. For aluminium alloys the majority are stress-endurance curves for constant amplitude loading showing the endurance of a test specimen (including welded joints) with and without shot peening. Also shown are the effects of various pre- and post-treatments such as polishing, heat treatment and stretching. Some data include the effects of fretting and salt water, and one graph plots endurance of 7075 alloy against Almen intensity. For steels all data are stress-endurance plots for test specimens or welded joints with and without peening and including the effect of post-stretching in one case. Data for Ti-6Al-4V include the effect of fretting and elevated temperature on endurance with and without shot peening. For each set of data details are given of material specification, specimen geometry and test conditions.
