Full Description

ENGLISH HISTORICAL VERSION

This standard describes the requirements of flexible expanded materials, to be used as air and dust seals or water seals and gaskets. These materials may also be used as noise isolators, covers for gaps and other suitable applications.

Material Description. Materials meeting the requirements of this specification will be comprised of two classes. Class l type expanded rubber materials will be used for air, dust and noise isolators and will not require a GM General Motors Material File (MATSPC) approval. Class II type expanded rubber materials must meet the water sealability requirements of 3.18 of this document. All Class II materials will be MATSPC approved.

Materials shall be identified according to ranges of compression deflection, per 3.3 as follows:

Type I < 5.00 kPa (Class I only)

Type II 5.00 to 21.00 kPa

Type III 21.01 to 48.00 kPa

Type IV 48.01 to 97.00 kPa

Type V 97.01 to 172.00 kPa

Type VI 172.01 to 276.00 kPa

Certain applications may require the use of an adhesive. If an adhesive (ADH) is required, an ADH suffix shall be added after the basic specification and type number.

Other interior parts will require a low friction coating (CO) to reduce friction between the seal and the substrate. When this coating is required, a CO suffix shall be added after the specification, class and type numbers.

Symbols. Not applicable.

Typical Applications. Not applicable.

Remarks. To properly use this specification, the following information must be added to the engineering drawing.

Specify material, e.g., Nitrile, Ethylene Propylene Type Rubber (EPDM), Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), etc.

Specify density and tolerance.

Indicate the ADH or CO suffix if an adhesive or low friction coating shall be used.

Identify application such as interior, exterior or underhood. There are specific tests required for each use.

Specify surface appearance and dimensions using current requirements (see note below) as agreed upon between engineering and the supplier.
