This Standard details the general requirements for the performance, operating characteristics, design, reliability and maintainability of gas turbine aero engines and associated jet pipes for use in UK military aeroplanes and rotorcraft. It also includes the demonstrations, tests, reports and provision of other data required to be completed satisfactorily and accepted prior to prototype flight clearance and sebsequent type approval of these engines by MOD(PE) on behalf of the user Service(s). Where requirements will be dependent on the particular operational role or design of the aircraft, guidelines are given on the detailed requirements to be included in the individual engine specification. Unless stated specifically otherwise, the term 'engine' in this Standard means the engine and its related equipment.

Not with standing the requirements for test verification contained within this Standard, the engine contractor shall be fully responsible for all features, characteristics and performance of the engine throughout the environmental conditions and operating envelope, to the extent required by contract.

The specification for an individual type or mark of engine and jet pipe shall be in accordance with the requirements/guidelines contained herein. Guidelines on the content and format of these individual specifications are given in clause 6.
