Full Description

This Defence Standard covers the general requirements for Soft Furnishings and Upholstery Fabrics for HM Surface Ships and Submarines.

It includes the materials to be used, and the make-up and manufacture of all soft furnishings including such items as mattresses, settee seats, backrest cushions, bedding stowage bags, covers, curtains and other miscellaneous items. The use of materials other than those listed in this Defence Standard is to be subject to the approval of the MoD. Foam materials must not be used in mattresses.

All materials proposed for installation within the breathable volume of the pressure hull of a Submarine must be assessed in accordance with BR 1326 and associated Submarine Materials Toxicity Database (SMTD) to establish toxicity and fire characteristics. Materials which have been assessed are listed in the SMTD; should a material not be listed it is to be referred to the Sea Systems Group.
