Full Description

Weapons

For the purposes of this standard, weapons are considered to be devices containing explosives, propellants, pyrotechnics, initiating compositions or other stored-energy components for use in military operations and their inert variants, excluding devices containing nuclear, biological or chemical (NBC) agents. Weapons included are:

a) Bombs

b) Small Arms and Small Arms Ammunition

c) Dispenser Weapon Systems

d) Demolition Materiel/Hand Emplaced Munitions

e) Guided Weapon Systems

f) Large Calibre Guns and Ammunition

g) Mines - excluding anti-personnel mines

h) Mortar Systems

i) Non-Operational Devices

j) Countermeasure Systems

k) Pyrotechnic Stores (including Flares and Pyrotechnic Hand Grenades)

l) Underwater Weapons

m) Unguided Rocket Systems

n) Remotely Operated Weapons

o) Cannon and Cannon Ammunition

Associated Systems

The standard also makes reference to the design aspects of associated equipment which directly or indirectly interface with the weapon. These perform the functions of launch/fire control, testing, handling, transporting and training and may affect the Safety and Suitability for Service (S3) of the weapon. Wherever appropriate and possible, the requirements are harmonised with the requirements of the relevant launch platform and interfacing requirements. The standard, however, does not provide the design requirements for launch platforms. Associated systems are:

a) Handling Equipment

b) Launch/fire Control Systems

c) Launchers

d) Platform/ Weapon Interfacing Equipment

e) Recovery Systems

f) Remote Guidance and Control Systems

g) Test Equipment

h) Training Aids

i) Weapons Support Equipment

Design Requirements

The standard is intended to define design requirements and processes applicable to weapons which are not covered adequately by standard texts or other standards. It is not intended to be a comprehensive design manual. The design requirements and processes covered include:

a) Compatibility of Material with Explosives

b) Design Verification and Certification

c) Design Standards

d) Environmental Engineering

e) Insensitive Munitions

f) Life Assessment

g) Operating and Maintenance characteristics

h) Qualification of Explosive Material

i) Safety Assessment

j) System Engineering Design and Analysis

k) Trials and Testing
