About This Item

Full Description

This Defence Standard defines the material and performance requirements for a weldable aluminium alloy armour in the form of extrusions and forgings, 6 mm and above, of nominal 4% Zinc 2% Magnesium Aluminium alloy in the solution treated and aged condition for the protection of crew and mechanism of armoured fighting vehicles against attack. See Def Stan 95-031 for the supply of this armour material in plate form.

It includes a requirement for suppliers to validate their proposed material production route and for the assessment of product quality by ballistic and other tests of pre-production or prototype material. The quality of production shall be assured by quality control, inspection and testing procedures defined in a Process Control Schedule (PCS).

For fabrication aspects of this material, reference should be made to Def Stan 08-039. See also the precautionary notes at clauses 7 and 8.

Where the “design end use” of the armour material is primarily for protection against overmatch or shock then the ballistic testing for release purposes may be amended to test for these attributes only. Any purchase orders must be clearly annotated and the armour material clearly identified to reflect the reduced testing and hence limited use of the material.
