PURPOSE AND SCOPE

This technical guidance note provides model calculations on the use Eurocodes for the design of substation structures using TS 3.01.04 Issue 3 Busbar systems for AIS Substations. The model calculations are there for guidance only and should be used by professionally qualified engineers. National Grid does not accept any liability arising from the use or misuse of these model calculations.

The structural eurocodes (SEc) are the suite of European Standards covering structural design of civil engineering and building works, including those relevant to National Grid Electricity Transmission. On the 31st March 2010 the UK National Standards were withdrawn by the British Standards Institution (BSi) and Eurocodes became the published and maintained structural design standards for the UK. The Technical Specification TS 3.01.04 Issue 2 Busbar systems for AIS Substations provided load combinations based on British Standard. The said British Standards were replaced in March 2010 by the Eurocodes BS EN 1990-1999 for the civil/structural design of engineering structures.

National Grid have now reviewed and aligned the Technical Specification suite of documents to Eurocodes. The updated version of TS 3.01.04 (Issue 3) has changed the load combination and factors to Eurocodes Compliant combinations.

This Technical Guidance Note provides model calculations for substation infrastructure design using Eurocode compliant load combinations and safety factors.
