About This Item

Full Description

This Standard specifies the minimum requirements for media and protocol-specific call control interoperability, acoustic performance, telephony feature support, safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and environmental performance of WLAN IP telephony endpoints operating in a business environment

Since WLAN are normally used for mobile devices, the specification is normally for such mobile device operated by battery power. However, non-mobile telephony endpoints using WLAN for connection are within the scope of this specification. In fact, although this Standard specifically addresses physical IP phones, it does not preclude the implementation of applicable functionality in a soft client. However, such soft implementations are not specifically addressed in this Standard.

This Standard applies specifically to WLAN IP telephony endpoints that are interfaced to the Wireless LANs. Due to the huge growth of products certified by Wi-Fi Alliance on the market, this present standard is focusing today on the IEEE 802.11 standards. Since many new specifications are in progress within the IEEE 802.11 working groups in terms of security, QoS, and mobility, this document may require updates whenever a new IEEE 802.11 standard is approved or a Wi-Fi Alliance Certification program becomes available. Also, these interoperability requirements should be applied to both 802.11b/g (2.4GHz band) and 802.11a (5GHz band), but need to be checked in terms of end-to-end performance.

This Standard defines a "VoWLAN profile" in the corporate environment. The specification for the roaming and handover requirements between different environments (home, public, corporate) is for further study. Also, this document does not address phones in a residential and public access WLAN environment.

This Standard harmonizes, wherever possible, with Megaco protocol as applicable to control of IP telephones.

This Standard supports the use of ITU-T Recommendation H.323 procedures for call establishment and call control.

This Standard supports the use of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for call establishment and call control.

Note: The choice of implementing H.323 or SIP or Megaco is up to the manufacturer.

This Standard does not place requirements on system level components such as call agents, proxy servers, gateways or gatekeepers or Wireless LAN infrastructure.

This Standard specifies security requirements pertaining to the provisioning of a WLAN IP telephony endpoint, but leaves the provisioning implementation itself up to the discretion of the manufacturer.
