Full Description

A successful, economical and expedient CAD conversion program was implemented by San Juan Water District. The process should be considered by any water district contemplating an automated mapping system. Laying the groundwork by becoming familiar with CAD conversion options via trade shows and technical publications was a key element in the District's success. Primary objectives were developed to establish the resources needed to effectively implement the project. These objectives were also helpful for the District in keeping the scope of the project on track. Existing system maps were evaluated for scanability. It is recommended that maps being considered for conversion be up to date, legible and at a scale of 1" = 200' or better. Resources should be allocated based on the scope of the conversion process as defined by the primary objectives. Consider partnerships as a resource to partially fund a conversion project. The conversion process of scanning, vectorizing and clean-up is simple and can be completed in-house. The project can be successfully implemented with adequate equipment and personnel assigned to the project who are formally trained in CAD. Pitfalls can be avoided by using a quality system with CAD. The entire CAD project should be backed up to a DAT system when its size exceeds 250 megs. A successful CAD conversion was found to be a very rewarding accomplishment for San Jose Water District. Practical steps were taken to effectively complete their conversion project with minimal complications. The result is a new mapping system poised and ready for the future challenges approaching the water industry.
