About This Item

Full Description

This standards cover structural requirements of ship-shaped and cylindrical units for world wide operation, and units permanently moored at a site specific location. The working stress design (WSD) method is generally used for the strength assessment, except for the hull girder ultimate strength criteria where the partial safety factor (PSF) design method, also named as the load and resistance factor design (LRFD), is applied.

The following topics are covered:

— design principles

— design loads

— material selection and inspection principles

— strength assessment

— ship-shaped and cylindrical unit specific requirements

— procedures and requirements for units subject to classification services.

This standard has structural requirements for the following:

— scantling control of plates, stiffeners and girders

— yield

— buckling

— fatigue

covered by the basic design conditions:

— transit condition

— operating condition

— survival condition

— accidental condition.

The acceptance criteria in this standard are based on a linear elastic strength approach, i.e. material yield stress limit. However, for special structural items it may be acceptable to use the plastic material capacity, i.e. ultimate material limit.

Serviceability requirements related to normal use or durability, e.g. deflections, vibration and functional motions related to operation are not covered in this standard.

Hull strength requirements for support of topside structures and modules are covered by the standard, while the strength requirement of topside structures and modules itself are not coved.

Guidance note:

Strength requirement of topside/topside module structures may be based on e.g. DNV-OS-E201, DNV-OS-C101, or other international standards.

Flag state and shelf state requirements are not covered by this standard.

Guidance note:

Flag state and shelf state regulations may include requirements in excess of the provisions of this standard depending on the type, location and intended service of the offshore unit.
