About This Item

Full Description

The Philadelphia Water Department evaluated pumping schedules and water demands in various high service district in Philadelphia and concluded that many of the pumps used in the distribution system were no longer operating in their optimum range. An investigation into available options resulted in very different solutions being implemented in each of the service districts. In one case, a smaller impeller was swapped into the casing of a larger pump. In the second pumping station, the pump impellers were simply trimmed by a machine shop to yield considerable power savings. At another station, new, smaller pumps were purchased to meet demand effectively. And at the final location, construction of a whole new pumping station provided benefits to several adjoining facilities. Includes table, figures.
