Full Description

This poster paper presents an all-pipes model of the Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) distribution system that can be used for both hydraulic and water quality modeling. Water quality simulations will be used for determining source of water, water age, free chlorine residual and trihalomethanes within the distribution system. The model will be a useful tool as GCWW evaluates the future operation of the water distribution system in order to achieve optimal water quality. The purpose of the field testing program was to obtain data for determining the assignment of chlorine wall decay coefficients within the water distribution system model. The field testing program involved the temporary monitoring of free chlorine residuals at 190 locations, which were divided into five areas in the distribution system. During the summer and fall of 2007, 38 temporary free chlorine monitors were installed for a period of about one week within each of the five areas. The monitoring locations were visited every two days for data collection and monitor maintenance. The collected data is being analyzed and will be the basis for chlorine calibration of the distribution system model.
