Pump Engineering, Inc., of Monroe, Michigan has undertaken the task of developing an energy recover device (ERD) that is rugged enough to withstand the rigors of long term reverse osmosis (RO) operation, has improved efficiency to recover energy at low pressures and flows and, importantly, can be economically purchased. Their success has been translated into the LPT Turbo line of products. These devices are basically stainless steel 304 or 316 in construction (lower cost and durable) and have been designed using the latest 3D CAD and CAM computer software (high efficiency complex geometry impellers). The turbine rotors and pump impellers are manufactured on 5 axis CNC milling machines. This paper describes the LPT Turbo and its successful application in a number of RO plants. Data and energy consumption for these low-pressure facilities are provided. Also, applications of the LPT Turbos in related water treatment plants are discussed. Includes 3 references, tables, figure.
