Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the water sector's need for a transparent decision-making process for disinfectant selection that considers all disinfectant options fairly, is carried out at the local level, and is based on established engineering practices. The various steps of the disinfectant selection process are presented, along with practical parallels to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) decision process. Concluding remarks include: disinfectant selection is extremely challenging in today's regulatory and public affairs environment; anticipated legislation will not alleviate this tension and is likely to make this basic operational decision even more difficult. Utilities are best served by: making disinfectant selections based on goals and objectives derived from utility governing board; following a transparent evaluation process; preparing now for future evaluations; integrating risk communication principles into the evaluation process; and, integrating stakeholder outreach early in the evaluation process. Includes tables.
