This Section of the Defence Standard defines the required electrical characteristics and methods of measurement for low voltage Ground Generating Sets (GGS). While many of the requirements within this standard could be applied to any form electrical power generation it is primarily focused on internal combustion engine driven devices. Any other power source would need special consideration when developing the reference for the Requirements Document Set.

It is the generic Standard for assessing electrical performance and may be called for, in whole or in part, from other sections of the Defence Standard.

While this part of the standard is titled Low Voltage its scope also extends to 28V dc but excludes power supplies in H.M. Ships, power supplies for on-aircraft servicing and 28V dc generators in military vehicles. For information on the requirements for low voltage electrical power supply systems on HM Ships and 28V dc for military vehicles the reader is directed to Part 4 & Part 6 of this standard respectively.
